A complexidade das linhagens Kaula e Nath
Explorando as Tradiçáes TÒntricas e Naths: Um Caminho de Shakti, Shiva e Yoga
The text has an English version at the end
A Tradição Kaula e o Culto à Shakti

Exploring Tantric and Nath Traditions: A Path of Shakti, Shiva and Yoga
Throughout my spiritual journey, I have come across traditions deeply rooted in ancient esoteric and philosophical practices, which interlink the cult of the Divine Mother, the teachings of the Siddhas and the rise of the Kundalini. Two of the spiritual currents that have most influenced my path are the Kaula and Nath traditions, both with roots in tantra, but each with unique nuances and lineages that offer different approaches to spiritual experience. This text is an attempt to share some of the richness of these traditions and how they, at once distinct and interconnected, are vital to a deep understanding of Shakti and Shiva.
The Kaula Tradition and Shakti Worship
The Kaula tradition, which I follow with reverence, is one of the most esoteric forms of tantra, centred on the worship of Shakti, the divine feminine energy that permeates the entire cosmos. Within the Bengali Kaula lineage, where I was initiated, the cult of Kali is of central importance. Kali, the fierce, ego-destroying goddess, represents both death and rebirth, leading the practitioner through darkness into the light of liberation. The Kali Tantra, one of the most important texts of the Kaula tradition, provides the guidelines for worshipping this powerful deity, including mantras, yantras and profound rituals aimed at awakening the practitioner's inner energy.
What sets the Kaula tradition apart from other forms of tantra is its focus on the direct experience of the divine through intense, devotional rituals, as well as the integration of worldly life with spiritual life. For Kaula, there is no separation between the sacred and the profane; everything is an expression of Shakti. MahaNirvana Tantra, another essential text that also permeates this tradition, offers a more balanced view of tantra, combining esoteric practices with a more structured ethical behaviour. This text is known for its moderate approach, guiding the practitioner to liberation (moksha) through tantric rituals, but also proposing a moral and disciplined life.
While many see tantra as something chaotic or rebellious, the Kaula tradition teaches us that there needs to be a deep reverence for life, a respect for the power of nature and a recognition of the sacredness present in all things. Shakti is the engine that drives the universe, and Kali, in her fiercest aspect, guides us through personal transformation by freeing us from the illusions of ego and fear.
Nath Sampradaya: The Tradition of the Siddhas and the Awakening of Kundalini
On the other hand, the Nath tradition - also an essential part of my path - stands out for its emphasis on controlling the body and mind through Hatha Yoga and practices related to Kundalini awakening. The Nath lineage was systematised by Gorakshanath, one of India's greatest yogic and tantric masters, whose writings, such as the Goraksha Shataka and the Goraksha Paddhati, offer us a practical and direct path to the mastery of inner energies.
The Nath Sampradaya is deeply focused on yoga practices, including pranayama (breath control), mudras (symbolic gestures) and bandhas (energetic clasps), to awaken and raise the Kundalini along the chakras to the Sahasrara, the centre of spiritual enlightenment. The Nath tradition, while revering both Shiva and Shakti, sees the body as a sacred vehicle for spiritual realisation, emphasising inner alchemy and transcending the limits of mortality.
Gorakshanath, like his Guru Matsyendranath, is revered for integrating the teachings of tantra with the practices of yoga. Under his guidance, the Nath tradition became one of the most influential schools of yoga in India, and its teachings, focussed on the control of prana and the mind, continue to be studied by those seeking mastery over the body and energy.
Connections and Intersections: Kaula and Nath
What often confuses those outside these lineages is the intersection between the Kaula tradition and the Nath tradition. Although they may seem distinct, they are deeply interconnected. In Kaula practice, especially within the Bengali lineage, many aspects of the Nath Sampradaya are incorporated, especially in relation to the awakening of Kundalini and the use of the body as an instrument for enlightenment.
This fusion of traditions is evident in the role of great masters, such as Guru Bam Kephya of Tara Pith, who integrate Kaula and Nath practices. The worship of Kali within Kaula and the practice of Hatha Yoga within Nath share the same goal: spiritual liberation and union with the divine, whether through devotion to the Divine Mother or mastery of the body's energies.
Essential Texts for Practice
Both the Kaula and Nath traditions are anchored in philosophical and practical texts that guide the aspirant on the path to liberation. Among the most important texts for understanding these traditions are:
Kali Tantra: Essential for the cult of the Shakti, especially for devotees of Kali. It offers rituals and mantras for inner transformation and the awakening of divine energy.
MahaNirvana Tantra: A guide to more moderate and ethical tantra, which connects ritual practices with moral life, always with the ultimate goal of liberation (moksha).
Gorakshanath Writings: Texts such as the Goraksha Shataka detail the path of Hatha Yoga and the awakening of Kundalini, with an emphasis on the control of prana and mastery of the body.
Final Reflections
By following these tantric paths, whether in the Kaula or Nath tradition, we learn that the spiritual quest is multifaceted. There is no single way to connect with the divine. Both the worship of Mother Kali and the yogic practices of Gorakshanath offer doors to enlightenment, each with its own challenges and rewards. What unites these traditions is the recognition of inner power - whether it's called Shakti or Kundalini - and the continuous search for transcendence, through surrender to the divine or through control of the mind and body. Another extremely important point is that none of this begins to move without the sacred relationship between Disciple and Guru, who must be venerated as a form of the living Shakti, in front of you. I was honoured to have all this knowledge through my Guruji Vishwanath GN
This journey, which is both intense and transformative, takes us back to the core of our being, where Shakti and Shiva unite, and duality gives way to non-duality.
