Robert Cochrane, a renowned British witch and occultist, is known for founding the Clan of Tubal Cain Witchcraft Tradition in the 1950s. Born in 1931 in London, Cochrane spent much of his life studying various magical traditions, including traditional witchcraft and ceremonial magic. He also stirred up some controversy, including with the βIllustriousβ Gerald Gardner, whom he called a fraud and a pervert!
During the 1950s, Cochrane created the Clan of Tubal Cain, a witchcraft tradition based on ancestral practices and a strong connection to nature. The name of the tradition refers to Tubal-Cain, a biblical character considered a master of metalworking, a blacksmith.
The Clan of Tubal Cain Tradition was influenced by the British traditional witchcraft tradition but also incorporated elements of other magical traditions such as ceremonial magic and shamanism. It valued nature and the connection with the spirits of the elements.
Cochrane believed that witchcraft was an ancestral tradition that could be applied practically and effectively to transform reality, emphasizing the importance of personal experience and intuition in magical practice, as well as the need to work with natural forces to achieve goals.
The Clan of Tubal Cain Tradition spread rapidly throughout Britain and other countries, making Cochrane an influential figure in the British magical community. However, he faced criticism and controversy, especially regarding the origin of the tradition.
After Doreen left, Cochrane committed adultery with a new woman from the clan and, according to other members, did not care if his wife Jane knew about it. In May 1966, Jane left Cochrane, initiating the divorce process and considering performing a death rite against her husband involving the sacrifice of a black rooster. Without her, the coven collapsed.
Cochrane ingested belladonna and Librium on the eve of summer 1966 and died nine days later in the hospital without regaining consciousness. He left a suicide note expressing his intention to kill himself βwhile of sound mind.β
Robert Cochrane passed away in 1966, leaving an important legacy in the tradition of British witchcraft. His teachings and practices continue to influence the magical community, and the Clan of Tubal Cain Tradition is still practiced by many people around the world.
Robert Cochrane initiated his wife Jane and a few others into the craft of witchcraft, who then joined the coven. Among them was Evan John Jones, who would eventually replace Cochrane as Magister of the Clan of Tubal Cain. Jones met Cochrane through his wife Jane, as they both worked for the same company. The group held their rituals at Cochraneβs house or, more often, at Burnham Beeches, although they also performed rituals in South Downs, after which they would spend the night at Doreen Valienteβs apartment in Brighton.
After the split with Gardner, Doreen Valiente joined Cochrane in 1964 and contributed to much of Cochraneβs βTraditional Witchcraftβ as she had to leave Wicca.
In 1966, Robert Cochrane passed away and his widow, Jane, named Jones as the new Magister of the Clan of Tubal Cain.
In 1982, two Americans named Dave & Ann Finnin contacted Gray and Jones. After four years of correspondence, Jones adopted the Finnins into the Clan of Tubal Cain and named them Magister and Maid of a satellite group called The Roebuck. However, conflicts arose later between Jones and the Finnins, and he ceased communication with the couple.
In 1996, Mike Howard, editor of The Cauldron, introduced Jones to a woman named Shani Oates. Two years later, Jones named Oates as the new Maid of the Clan of Tubal Cain, giving her βsupreme and undivided authority over the entire Clan.β Oates then named Robin, the Dart, as her Magister.
On the Winter Solstice of 2017, Oates named Ulric Goding as Magister of the Clan, as the successor to lead the Clan into future generations.
Oates described the creation of Cochraneβs witchcraft tradition as a wonderful, instinctively true, and intrinsically beautiful work that was able to shape raw material into a magical synthesis.
